A cat’s eye view of the world

Do cats look you in the eye more readily than dogs?

I drove into the parking lot for a business yesterday and immediately made eye contact with a beautiful green-eyed tortoiseshell cat. It was calmly sitting in the reception area, watching my arrival through a large window. It didn’t break eye contact until I had to do so. And when I went inside, it greeted me at the door.

So – are cats more or less social than our canine friends? Was the tortoiseshell challenging me, or silently telling me I should greet and pat it when I walked in?
